January 2024 - Roxeth Girls football team win the league!
On the 24th January the Roxeth Year 5 and 6 girls football team went to the‘Hive’ part of Barnet FC, for league matches against 3 other schools. The weather was lovely although there had been lots of rain previously but thankfully, we were on astro turf.
The first match was against Stanburn. Both teams had chances in this match and it felt that the match would be won by one goal. Some very good play in midfield and upfront from Saanvi and Rafa made sure that we competed in all areas of the pitch. Fortunately, it was Roxeth who scored the decisive goal with a really well taken goal from Haneen. It was no surprise the game continued to be close but we managed to hold on until the end of the match to secure our first win 1-0.
The second match was against St Bernadette’s. This was a very tight game and St Bernadette’s took an early lead from a break away goal. The game continued to be very close with individual battles all over the pitch. Roxeth finally got an equalizer through some great individual skills from Haneen who finished in the bottom corner. This gave the team further confidence and a boost to keep the pressure on. Soon after Haneen scored her second goal to put us 2-1 up. Roxeth managed to keep the defence tight and hold on for a 2-1 win!
The third match was against Krishna Avanti. This match was again very close with both sides doing extremely well in defence with some excellent tackles all over the pitch. I want to emphasise that in the last few seconds of the match the attacker had a wonderful chance in front of the goal with just the goalie to beat but an amazing last-ditch tackle from Tamryn made sure they did not score. The match finished 0-0.
So, after 3 matches we were unbeaten, 2 wins and 1 draw which was a fantastic achievement against some very tough schools. This meant that the girls won the league and went through to the finals that took place on the 21st February - more news on that to follow on the next newsletter.
Well done to the following girls who all did brilliantly: Haneen, Lena, Saanvi, Rafa, Sara P, Sofia, Aminah, Iqra, Tamryn, Hayley.
