Reading

In Reception and Year 1, to support the acquisition of phonics, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Programme. Pupils receive weekly eBooks, which are introduced and explored in the classroom and then practised at home. In addition, pupils take home physical books from our Independent Reading Scheme, carefully matched to their reading level to further develop fluency and confidence.
Every child from Reception to Year 6 has an individual reading book chosen from our levelled reading scheme, which consists of books from Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Star and Collins Big Cat. These books are taken home to be read aloud to an adult. Pupils also read regularly to their teacher and teaching assistant, ensuring their reading is appropriately supported and challenged. A dialogue between parents and teachers is fostered through the use of a reading record, which is signed by both parents and staff when reading with children.
Alongside our structured reading programmes, we actively promote a love of reading through a variety of enriching experiences. These include our exciting Reading Week (held every two years), author visits, World Book Day activities such as dressing up as a book character and links to recommended reading websites and local libraries.
At Roxeth, we are proud of our well-stocked library. Pupils have weekly opportunities to choose their own fiction and non-fiction books, encouraging independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of reading.
For reading sessions in the classroom, we follow the Literacy Tree – Literary Leaves programme, which covers all the requirements of the English reading curriculum. Through these taught lessons, a carefully planned sequence of activities takes pupils through whole texts to develop reading comprehension and create critical readers. Literary Leaves uses a wide range of text types, including novels, poetry and high-quality non-fiction, which link closely with our writing scheme.
