Y3 Science and Design & Technology – Learning About Food

This term in Science and Design and Technology, we have been learning all about food!

In Science, we explored the different food groups and learnt how to read nutritional labels on food packages. We discovered how important nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals help our bodies to grow, learn, and stay active.

In DT, we focused on eating seasonally and learnt about food miles — how far our food travels before it reaches our plates — and how this affects the environment.

We also developed our cooking skills, learning to use the claw grip and bridge grip safely to cut fruits and vegetables. We designed our own mock pies, carefully choosing and tasting ingredients. During our tasting, we noticed that courgettes taste similar to cucumbers! Finally, we cooked our tarts, tasted them, and wrote thoughtful evaluations and reviews of our finished dishes.
