Year 1 core learning activities to do at home

Here are the main areas that Year 1 would like you to work on at home if the school is closed due to the Coronavirus.

Week 10 

Maths- Focus is Money.

  • Lesson 1:  Find different coins in your house. Look at the coins closely and recognise their value. Play the game: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins-game

  • Lesson 2: Look at page 2 of the presentation:  how 10p coin is the same as counting in 10’s. Then solve the worksheet 1 and then try worksheet 2

  • Lesson 3: Look at page 3 of the presentation: how 5p coin is the same as counting in 5’s. Then solve the worksheet 1 and then try worksheet 2

  • Lesson 4: L Look at page 4 of the presentation: how the 2p coin is the same as counting in 2’s. Then solve the worksheet 1

  • Lesson 5: Look at page 5 of the presentation. How can you add different values of the coins?  Remember money is the similar to counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Remember to put “p” after adding the total. Try worksheet 1 and then try worksheet 2

  • Challenge

  • After you have finished the work you can try the challenge worksheet 1 and then try challenge 2.

Week 11 

Maths- Focus is Money.

Lesson 1:   Please refer to page 1 of the presentation. Make amounts using different value coins. You can use real coins from around the house to make the amount. Remember to count in 10’s, 5’s, 2’s to help you make the amount. Try Worksheet 1 and then try Worksheet 2.

Lesson 2: Look at page 2 of the presentation. How much do I have to pay? You can make this activity practical and use real coins to help you work out the answers. Try Worksheet 1

Lesson 3: Look at page 3 of the presentation: Finding change. Remember finding change is similar to take away. Try Worksheet 1 and then try Worksheet 2

Lesson 4: Look at page 4 of the presentation. Read the word problems carefully. Then circle the words that give you a clue of what you need to do e.g. adding or finding change.  Try Worksheet 1 and then try Worksheet 2.

Lesson 5: Look at page 5 of the presentation. Can you work out the answers mentally? Try the Mental Maths cards.

  • Lesson 1: Watch the story ‘Supertato’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlaMeNmTG6cand re-tell the story in your own words. Remember to retell the main ideas such as who the main character is, where is the setting and what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

  • Lesson 2:  Complete the wanted poster for Evil Pea. Using adjectives describe the Evil Peas name, colour, what he is wearing and the crimes his has done.

  • Lesson 3: Making comparison to two different stories. Re-watch ‘Supertato’. Then watch ‘Supertato Vegies Assembled’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3SymlvibCM. Using a Venn diagram compare the two stories identifying what is similar in the stories and what are the differences.   • Lesson 4: Write a story about Supertato. Change the problem of the story and how to solve it. Remember to keep Supertato and Evil Pea as the main characters. Draw a story map to help plan your story. When you write your story remember to use:

  • - Full stops, capital letters and finger spaces

  • - Time connectives such as next, then, after, later on, suddenly

  • Lesson 5: Comprehension task- read a take home reader or a book from Oxford Owl online book. After reading answer the questions cards in the attachment.

  • Reading: Oxford Owl website has a free e-book library full of level readers that are like our take home readers from school.   • Brain Breaks- Follow the brain break timetable. Brain Breaks increase your child’s focus during learning tasks and the amount of physical activity they get every day.

Topic Week 10

This week in topic we will be focusing on plants

Topic Week 11

Lesson 1: Science. Look at the presentation on trees. Now write down 1 similarity and difference between deciduous trees and evergreen trees. 

Lesson 2: Science. Look at the presentation to identify garden plants. Now draw, colour and label some of the garden plants that you can identify in the environment around you.

Lesson 3: History (Local Area). We are going to learn about Winston Churchill. Look at the presentation. Now try History Worksheet.

Lesson 4: Geography. Look at the presentation. Make a map of the school. Remember to include the playground, library and the hall. Use a key to identify the main parts of the school. Geography worsheet

Lesson 5: Geography. Listen to the story of Rosie’s Walk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aynZh1-fsBg. Help Rosie to get to school. Think carefully of the route from your home to school. Draw and label what you see on the way. Remember to draw a key.
