Year 1 core learning activities to do at home

Week 12

Maths- Focus is Multiplication

Lesson 1:   Please refer to page 1 of the presentation.   We are learning about repeated addition. Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8trPHq1rx8. Now try the activity on page 2. Start with Step 1, then do Step 2 and lastly try Step 3.

Lesson 2: Look at page 3 of the presentation. We are learning about doubling.  Look at the power point. Try Worksheet 1, attempt Worksheet 2 and then try the challenge.

Lesson 3: Look at page 4 of the presentation. Watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/maths-ks1--ks2-how-to-use-arrays-to-multiply/zrks382. Look at the power point. We are learning to create an array using objects around the house. You could use Lego pieces, apples, pencils or even your soft toys. Remember that they have to be in rows and each rows should have equal number of objects.  Then talk to an adult and explain them how many rows and how many in each row.

Lesson 4: Look at page 5 of the presentation. We are learning to draw arrays. Look at page 6 of the presentation and start with Step 1, Step 2and then attempt Step 3.

Lesson 5: Look at page 7 of the presentation. We are learning about word problems. Try Worksheet 1, Worksheet 2 and then try Worksheet 3.

Week 13

Maths- Focus is Division

Lesson 1:   Please refer to page 1 of the presentation.   We are learning about sharing. Take some objects from around the house, count how many and then share them equally with an adult or sibling. Are you able to share them equally? Are you able to divide fairly?

Lesson 2: Look at page 2 of the presentation. We are learning about halving.  Watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z6bq6sg.  Look at the power point 1 and power point 2. Try worksheet 1,2 and 3.

Lesson 3: Look at page 4 of the presentation.  The attempt work on page 5.  We are learning to divide in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Start with Step 1, then Step 2 and lastly attempt Step 3. Remember to start counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Count how many jumps did you have to make to reach the number?

Lesson 4: Look at page 6 of the presentation. We are learning to group objects equally. Look at page 7. Then try and attempt the activity on page 8. Start with Step 1, then do Step 2 and finally attempt Step 3.

Lesson 5: Look at page 7 of the presentation. We are learning about word problems. Try Worksheet 1 and Worksheet 2.

Challenge

Try activity on page 3. Try with Step 1, then Step 2 and lastly attempt Step 3. Can you find an easy way to divide? Clue: dividing is the inverse of multiplication.

Year 1 core learning activities to do at home - Here are the main areas that Year 1 would like you to work on at home if the school is closed due to the Coronavirus.

Week 12

  • Lesson 1: Watch the story ‘Supertato Run Veggies Run’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIeAHK-5m6E … and re-tell the story in your own words. Remember to retell the main ideas such as who the main character is, where the setting is and what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

  • Lesson 2: Action Verbs: Read through the attachment named Verbs PowerPoint. This will explain what verbs are. Watch the action verbs video and follow the actions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3EYciNco58). Re-read ‘Supertato Run Veggies Run’ and write as many action verbs you can see throughout the book. Write five sentences using the verbs you have found in the story.

  • Lesson 3: Making comparison to two different stories. Re-watch ‘Supertato Run Veggies Run’. Then watch ‘Supertato Evil Pea Rules’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmFYrfquR5k. Using a Venn diagram compare the two stories identifying what is similar in the stories and what are the differences.   • Lesson 4: Like the story ‘Supertato Evil Pea Rules’, write a story from the Evil Pea’s point of view. Change the problem of the story and how to solve it. Remember to keep Supertato and Evil Pea as the main characters. Draw a story map to help plan your story. When you write your story remember to use:

  • - Full stops, capital letters and finger spaces

  • - Time connectives such as next, then, after, later on, suddenly

  • Lesson 5: Comprehension task- read a take home reader or a book from Oxford Owl online book.

Before reading, look at the front cover of the story. Answer the question card with the purple background. Once you have read the story reflect on whether your prediction was close to what happened in the story. Then answer the question card with the blue background.

Week 13

  • The next two weeks will be listening to and studying the A.A. Milne book ‘Winnie the Pooh’

  • Lesson 1: Comprehension task- read a take home reader or a book from Oxford Owl online book. After reading answer the questions cards in the attachment.

Read through the PowerPoint attached called The Characters of Winnie the Pooh. Name and describe your favourite Winnie the Pooh character and explain why. 

  • Lesson 3: Watch the informational video about the history of Winnie the Pooh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJdNhwKkaA0. Read the information about the author A.A.Milne in the attachment A.A.Milne powerpoint. Complete a character profile for A.A. Milne stating important information about the author.  

  • Lesson 4: Listen to the first chapter of Winnie the Pooh called ‘In Which We Are Introduced to Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees, and the Stories Begin’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa3SwVCb25c. Stop the audio book at 6:21. Brainstorm ideas on how will Winnie the Pooh get honey with a balloon. Draw their favourite idea on paper showing how Pooh gets honey with a balloon. Then listen to the rest of the chapter to learn how Pooh tried to get the honey.

  • Lesson 5: Listen to the second chapter of Winnie the Pooh called ‘In Which Pooh Goes Visiting and Gets Into a Tight Place’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa3SwVCb25c. Stop the audio book at 6:13. Think about what you would suggest to Pooh to help him get out of the hole. Write a letter to Pooh offering your suggestions. There is a poster in the attachment giving you an example on how to write a letter. Once you have finished your letter, listen to rest of the book.

Write and draw the 6 different stages of the life cycle of a plant in each circle. Only write the stage name and not the information. The first stage has been written for you.    

  • Lesson 2: Life cycle of an apple tree: watch the video on the life cycle of an apple tree

  • Lesson 4: Physical Features: Look at the attachment called physical and human powerpoint. Read the information from slides 1- 16. Write the definition of what physical features are and then draw and label at least 6 different physical features that your have learnt about.

  • Lesson 5: Human Features: Look at the attachment called physical and human powerpoint. Read the information from slides 17- 28. Write the definition of what human features are and then draw and label at least 6 different human features that your have learnt about.

Topic Week 13

Please read through Worksheet 1 and Prompt cards with the help of an adult. Record your findings.

Lesson 2 History : Last 2 weeks you have been learning about Winston Churchill and Naomi Riches.  We are going to compare them. On a piece of paper please write at least 2 similarities and differences between them.

Lesson 3 Science : We are going to be learning about Summer. Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg5i9rxxuJM. Look at the presentation. Draw a picture of summer and write down 3 facts about the summer season.

Lesson 4 DT: Keeping up with our topic of Winnie the Pooh. We are going to make Moving books. Read the letter. Take A4 paper and create your own 100 Acre Woods by drawing trees, grass and creating your own background. Colour in or paint the picture.

Lesson 5 DT : Pick any one of your favourite characters from Winnie the Pooh. Cut then out and colour them. Then stick the end part of the character on the lolly stick. Take your picture and at the bottom, with the help of an adult, slit the picture. Make sure the slit does not go through the ends of the paper. We don’t want the paper slit in half. Then slide your character through the slit. Enjoy creating your own stories. Examples of Moving Books.
