Year 2 core learning activities to do at home

Here are the main areas that Year 2 would like you to work on at home if the school is closed due to the Coronavirus.

Week 1


  • Write a Spring poem where each sentence starts with ‘Spring is when…’

  • Write an animal riddle where each sentence starts with ‘I am…’to give clues for what the animal is.

  • Describe and draw an animal of their choice using as many adjectives as possible

  • Make a non-fiction book about animals of their choice. Include a contents page  and each page of the non-fiction book to have the following- Heading, picture of the animal, where they live, what they eat, what they look like and any other facts about them.



  • Revise the names and properties of 2D and 3d shapes

  • Look at the properties of regular and irregular pentagons, hexagons and octagons

  • Revise adding and taking away with 2 digit numbers…eg 45-23=   or 23+56=

  • Recognise right angles on shapes

Week 2


  • Read the Easter story online … and re-tell the story in your own words. Remember to write the story in the past tense

  • Design and describe your own magical Easter egg

  • Write a story involving the Easter egg that you’ve designed and described

  • Write a list of Homophones (words which sound the same but are spelt differently and that have different meanings) eg, bear/bare,  their/there/they’re, see/sea



  • Understand quarter and half turns…children can draw an object and  then make a variety of turns with that object and draw new the positions

  • Learn about anti-clockwise and clockwise

  • Locating objects on a grid reference using co-ordinates

  • Finding lines of symmetry on 2d shape
