Week 10

Communication and Language & Reading

  • Activity: Oxford Owl – Read Oxford Reading Tree books for free!

  • Continue to read books from the ebook library.

  • Discuss what happened in the story, what might happen next, how did the characters feel, how could the ending be different?

  • Use the guides at the beginning and end of each book to support your child’s reading.

  • Activity 1: Verbally re-tell the story

  • Use the sequencing cards provided.

  • Encourage your child to remember as much of the story language as possible. E.g. In the light of the moon…

  • To help your child remember the story you can create actions to go with each part of the story.

  • Activity 2: Describing fruit.

  • Draw a picture of your favourite fruit (it does not have to be from the story)

  • Use interesting words to describe how your fruit feels, smells and tastes.

  • Either label your drawing or write sentences to describe your fruit.

  • You can use the Describing Fruit word mat and Describing Fruit Writing Template provided.

  • Look through the Minibeasts PowerPoint.

  • Encourage your child to work out which minibeast they are looking at. Encourage your child to name the different minibeasts and learn some facts about them in the sorting activity.

Support your child to read the mini beast descriptions and match them to the correct mini beast

  • Read through the questions with your child. Encourage your child to answer the questions, referring back to the story if they need to.

Maths

Shape, space and measure: Setting the Time

  • Discuss with your child how you set the time to the hour. You can demonstrate this using an anologue clock or watch in your house. Discuss how the hour hand must always be on the 12 and the minute hand must be on the correct hour.

  • Complete the Setting the time activity.

Mini Beasts

  • Look through the Minibeasts PowerPoint from the previous week.

  • Encourage your child to remember the names of the minibeasts and discuss their body parts.

Activity: Sorting Minibeasts

  • Encourage your child to cut out the pictures of minibeasts. This will help their scissor skills, but help them if they need it!

  • Encourage your child to stick the minibeasts onto the correct table, depending on whether they have legs or no legs, wings or no wings.

  • As your child is sticking in the mini beasts talk with them about interesting facts relating to the different mini beasts. Encourage your child to do most of the talking where possible.
