Year 4 English core learning activities to do at home

Here are the main areas that Year 4 would like you to work on at home whilst the school is closed due to the Coronavirus.

*Read every day and complete a reading comprehension of your choice once a week.*

Week 1

English-

Choose a character and write adjectives to describe them.

  • Watch the clip again. Think about the relationship between the characters and what their jobs are. Write a dialogue (speech) for the scene in the boat where the boy gets his hat.

  • Write a job description for the family business.

  • Tell the story of La Luna to an adult at home.

 

Week 2

English-

  • Watch the Disney short ‘La Luna’ again;

  • For these 3 points in the film write sentences that ‘show not tell’ how the young boy feels 1) When he receives his hat 2) as he climbs the ladder 3) when the big star lands on the moon.

  • Make a list of everything that happens in the film in chronological order using a variety of time conjunctions

  • Write a Diary entry about the film ‘La Luna’. Remember to include the key features

  1. Write in the past tense

  2. Write in the first person (you are the little boy)

  3. Use time conjunctions and adverbials.

  4. Use more than one sense, to make your description more imaginable.

  5. Include emotions and feelings ‘REMEMBER SHOW NOT TELL’

Week 1 (23/03/20):

  • Understand how to count up and down in hundredths:

  • Go through the Hundredths concept Powerpoint. Complete questions in the power point.

  • Try to complete: Count in Hundredths worksheet

 

Week 2 (30/03/20):

  • Practise to count up and down in multiples of ten. Open Counting on by tens file and work through the questions.

  • Can you challenge yourself to count back in tens? Try the questions in Counting back by tens file.

  • Can you try to do some place value work: Open file Place Value 4 Digit Names file and work through the questions Can you solve the riddle at the end?

Week 1 (23/03/20):

Play coordinates 1 and Coordinates 2 games on Purple Mash

  • Go through What are coordinates? Powerpoint. Complete– Coordinate polygons sheet

  • Draw polygons by finding co-ordinates on a grid - Drawing shapes sheet (handed out to children last week) or What are the coordinates? sheet

  • Go through Translations powerpoint. Describe translation using coordinates- Translation sheet (handed out to children last week) or Translation sheet from Twinkl

 

Week 2 (30/03/20):

  • Go through Types of angles powerpoint. Compare and order angles – use a right angle checker (made out of scrap paper) to find different angles around the house. Make a list of those which are acute, obtuse and right angles). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TOsHQYEh3M

  • Order angles – Ordering angles sheet

  • Go through types of quadrilaterals powerpoint. Describe a variety of quadrilaterals based on their properties – Quadrilaterals sheet

  • Go through types of triangles powerpoint. Describe a variety of triangles based on their properties – Sorting Triangles sheet (any sheet of your choice from this)

Week 1 (23/03/20):

  • Recognise the decimal equivalents of tenths and hundreds (worksheet given)

  • Dividing 1, 2 and 3 digit numbers by 10 and 100 using a place value grid (worksheet given)

  • Compare and order decimal numbers with up to 2 decimal places. (worksheet given)

  • Round decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number. (worksheet given)

 

Week 2 (30/03/20):

  • Calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear shape.

  • Measure and calculate the perimeter of given shapes.

  • To find the area of a rectilinear shape by counting squares

  • To calculate the area of a rectilinear shape.
