Year 1 core learning activities to do at home - Here are the main areas that Year 1 would like you to work on at home if the school is closed due to the Coronavirus.

Week 7

The next two learning weeks (not including half term) will be listening to and studying the Roald Dahl book ‘The Twits’

Brain Breaks-

  • Follow the brain break timetable. Brain Breaks increase your child’s focus during learning tasks and the amount of physical activity they get every day.

  • Listen to chapters 14-17 from the story ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl. Stop the audiobook at 5:39 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFDDJkvNBis). Draw and Describe The Twits’ house. In the attachment there is an extract to help you visualise what house may look like.   

  • Listen to chapters 18- 21 from the story. Start at 5:39 and stop the audiobook at 10:54 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFDDJkvNBis). Write a paragraph describing the Roly Poly Bird. Use adjectives to describe what the Roly Poly Bird looks like and what it’s personality is.

  • Listen to chapters 22- 25 from the story. Start at 10:54 and stop the audiobook at 18:07 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFDDJkvNBis). Imagine that you are Muggle- Wump Monkey, write instructions on how to turn the inside of the house upside down. Watch the video ‘Writing Instruction’ to help tell you how to write this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2189sv8Bvy4&t=92s)

Listen to chapters 26- 29 from the story. Start at 18:07 and stop the audiobook at 25:58 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFDDJkvNBis). Imagine that you are either the Roly Poly Bird or one of the Muggle- Wump Monkeys. You are going to write a postcard to The Twits explaining your journey back to Africa and what you have been doing since you have arrived. You may even say politely how you are glad to be away from The Twits and explaining why for example I am so glad that I no longer have to write my water upside down as it was impossible to swallow it down. Things to remember when writing the postcard: at the start write who the postcard is for and at the end write who it is from. Full stops, capital letters, finger spaces and letter formation. There is an example in the attachment on how to set out your postcard.

Topic Week 7

Lesson 1: Science. Look at the presentation on absorbent and non-absorbent materials. Then attempt the worksheet on absorbent and non-absorbent materials. This is a practical activity and you can use other materials to try and test their absorbency. 


Lesson 2: Science. Look at the presentation of magnetic materials. Try and use a magnet and test their magnetic attraction towards one another. Are the objects pulling or pushing away from each other? Then attempt the worksheet


Lesson 3: History. We have been learning about toys from the past. Look at the presentation on Toys from the past.  On the last page there is a picture of a teddy from the past. Your task is to compare teddies from the past to the present.  On a paper write a few sentences on what you observe. E.g. The teddies from the past had glass eyes.  


Lesson 4: History. You can make a pinwheel. Learn the history of Pinwheels. Look at the presentation and make one of your own.

Topic Week 9 (after half term)

Lesson 1: Science. You are going to learn about absorbent and non-absorbent materials. Watch the video to learn what absorbent materials are (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiC33kr35wM). You are now going to investigate different materials around your house to see which are absorbent or non-absorbent. Complete the Absorbent Materials Experiment activity.

 

Lesson 2: Science. You are going to learn about the sun. Watch the Sun Facts PowerPoint which will help you learn about interesting information about the sun. Write down six interesting facts that you have learnt about the sun using the sun facts worksheet.

 

Lesson 3: Science You are going to be learning about shadows. Watch both informational videos explaining what shadows are and how they are produced. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuUJCNzfoBw) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOIGOT88Aqc). Using a light source such as the sun, lamp or touch, you are going to create a shadow drawing. Choose an object you would like to trace around the shadow. Next add details to the drawing by adding details to the outline and a background. Lesson 4: History You are going to learn about Victorian toys and games. Watch the video about Victorian toys and games (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSsoDTmiq-k). You are now going to make your own Victorian toy: Ball and cup game. Follow the procedure and create your own game. Challenge: How many times can you catch the ball in a row?

 

Lesson 5: History  You are going to learn about how toys have change from the past. Watch the video showing 100 years of toys (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDAPaEVr1Hk). Ask an adult in your family what kind of toys did they play with when they were younger. Complete a venn diagram seeing what was similar or different.
