Year 1 core learning activities to do at home

Here are the main areas that Year 1 would like you to work on at home if the school is closed due to the Coronavirus.

Week 3

English-

  • Watch the story ‘Aliens love underpants’ by Clare Freedman and Ben Cort https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWbSrmuyptw… and re-tell the story in your own words. Remember to retell the main ideas such as who the main character is, where is the setting and what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

  • Draw and describe your own pair of underpants that you think the aliens will love. Use eight adjectives to describe the underpants. Put those adjectives into sentences. Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, finger spaces and use a full stop at the end.  

  • Making comparison to two different stories. Re-watch ‘Aliens love underpants’. Then watch ‘Pirates love underpants’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd8_Y1bEzA8. Using a Venn diagram compare the two stories identifying what is similar in the stories and what are the differences.   • Editing Activity. Please read the editing cards. On each card it explains to you how many things that you need to edit in the text. Rewrite the text correctly.

  •  Comprehension task- if you are reading pink and red level readers please read and answer the questions for Jack’s Beetle. If you are reading yellow, blue, green, orange, turquoise, purple, gold and white level readers please read and answer the questions to the advertisement for The Cardboard Box.

  • Follow the brain break timetable. Brain Breaks increase your child’s focus during learning tasks and the amount of physical activity they get every day.

Week 3

Maths

  • Learn to write numbers in words. E.g. 13- thirteen. Learn to spell and write numbers up to 20. Extension: Can you write numbers in words up to 100. What pattern do you notice?

  • Look for patterns. Can you finish the pattern? Where do you notice patterns? Can we only make patterns out of shapes? Make a pattern using numbers. E.g. 2, 4, 6, 2, 4, 6.

  • Partition Numbers in tens and ones. E. g. 24= 20+4.

  • Partition numbers and be able to guess the numbers. E.g 40+ 6= 46

  • Partition using dienes and cubes. To be able to understand how many tens and ones are there in a number. E.g. 84= 8 tens and 4 ones.

Week 4

English-

  • Read ‘Shopping basket’ by John Burningham https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_HYKelQG6Y … and re-tell the story in your own words. Remember to retell the main ideas such as who the main character is, where is the setting and what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

  • Describe the setting of a supermarket. Using four of your senses please describe what does it sound like, what can you see, what can you smell and what does it feel like? When you are walking around the supermarket.    

  • Write a shopping list using commas. With your parents write a shopping list of food and products you will need in your next shop. Remember to use a comma in between each item. Just before you write your last item instead of writing a comma, you need to write and.

  • Write a story about going to the supermarket. Change the items that you need to buy and what are the different animals that you see on your way home from the supermarket. Draw a story map to help plan your story. When you write your story remember to use:

- full stops, capital letters and finger spaces

             -  Time connectives such as next, then, after, later on, suddenly

  • Talking marks/ Speech marks. In each speech bubble, write down what each animal has said during the book using talking marks/speech marks. Remember before you write the speech you need to draw “ and at the end you need to draw ”

  • Comprehension task- if you are reading pink and red level readers please read and answer the questions for The Lost Kitten. If you are reading yellow, blue, green, orange, turquoise, purple, gold and white level readers please read and answer the questions to the advertisement for My Dog Doggo.

Week 4

Maths

  • Time: revise o’clock and half past times. Make a clock using the resources. Then cut out the minute and hour hand. Show times using half past and o’clock.

  • Time word problems: Read the word problems and using the clock that you have made solve the word problem. Can you create your own word problems?

  • Draw a spider. Then take a ruler and cut strips of paper of different lengths. Measure the strips and create your own spider legs.  E.g. 5cms, 8cms, 12cms or 18cms. Remember to start from 0cm.

  • Capacity:  Use the language litres and millilitres, full, empty and half full. Take different cups and measure how much liquid each container holds. Try and measure the liquid in the container. Next take the largest container and estimate how many small cups it will take to fill the container. Measure how many cups will be needed to fill up 1 milk container.

  • Weights: (Practical activity) Use the language kilograms, grams, heavy, light, heavier and lighter. Try and take different objects like potatoes, tomatoes, cans or flour bags. Estimate the weight and record on the resource sheet. Then weigh the objects. Were you able to estimate correctly?
