Reception core learning activities to do at home Weeks 3 & 4

Here are the main areas that we would like you to work on at home during the continued school closure.

Week 5


Physical Development
Activity 1: Letter Formation
•    Use the Letter Formation pdf provided to practise letter formation for letters: c, k, ck, e, u 
•    Follow the directions shown on the letter formation worksheet.
•    Please only complete formation for the letters set for this week.
Communication and Language & Reading
Activity 1: Oxford Owl – Read Oxford Reading Tree books for free!
•    Follow the link below to register for Oxford Owl (registration is free)

•    Once you have registered you will be sent an activation email. Please activate your account. 
•    Visit the ebook library: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/books/free-ebooks/
•    Click on ‘Levels’ button. Select Book Band and click on the correct book band colour for your child.

 

 

 

 

•    You will then be able to click on a book to read from the ebook library.  
 

English
Activity 1: Dear Zoo
•    Read Dear Zoo to your child using the  Dear Zoo PowerPoint provided. Alternatively, you can watch the video following the link: https://youtu.be/rudDGRQ9QGA 
•    Encourage your child to predict which animal is in each container.
•    Draw a picture of your favourite animal.
•    Write sentences or words to describe your favourite animal.
•    Try to include new words you have learned e.g. The frog is too jumpy.
Activity 2: Tricky words - Phase 3
•    Practise reading and writing tricky words by completing the Tricky Words Activity Booklet provided for phase 3. This booklet should be completed over 2 weeks.


Maths
Activity 1: Halving Amounts
•    Recap how we half amounts.
•    Complete the Halves on Butterfly pdf. Choose the most appropriate sheet depending on how much support your child needs.
Activity 2: Adding Coins
•    Recap the values each coin is worth up to £2
•    Choose from Adding Coins to 5p, Adding coins to 10p or Adding Coins to 20p, depending on how much support your child needs. 
•    Support your child to add money by focusing on the value of coins altogether rather than counting the number of coins.

  • Use the Letter Formation pdf provided to practise letter formation for letters: r,h,b,f,l 

  • Follow the directions shown on the letter formation worksheet.

  • Please only complete formation for the letters set for this week.

 

Communication and Language & Reading

Activity 1: Oxford Owl – Read Oxford Reading Tree books for free!

  • Continue to read books from the ebook library.

  • Discuss what happened in the story, what might happen next, how did the characters feel, how could the ending be different?

  • Use the guides at the beginning and end of each book to support your child’s reading.

 

English

Activity 1: Write the story of Dear Zoo.

  • Choose from Dear Zoo Story Board 1, Dear Zoo Story Board 2 or Dear Zoo Story Board 3 depending on how much you wish your child to write. This activity should be carried out over the week.

  • Include your own interesting words in your writing e.g. He was too wriggly.

  • Remember to include capital letters at the beginning of sentences, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end of the sentence.

Maths

Activity 1: Recapping Take away

  • Use the Subtraction PowerPoint to recap taking away.

  • Take away from numbers up to 5, 10 or 20. Choose the correct sheet to suit your child.

  • Use objects to help you to take away or cross out the number of objects on the sheet.

Activity 2: Adding Coins

  • Find different ways to make 5p, 10p, 20p.

  • Choose from the sheets: Different ways to make 5p, Different ways to make 10p, Different ways to make 20p.

  • Remind children to focus on the value of coins rather than counting the number of coins.

SUPPORT FOR PARENTS

Salt Dough Recipe:

Ingredients:

½ cup salt
2 cups of flour
¾ cup of water

Method:
1. In a large bowl mix salt and flour together.
2. Gradually stir in water. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency.
3. Turn the dough onto the bench and knead with your hands until smooth and combined.
4. Make your creations using the salt dough.
